A town map of Arundel, circa 1560, shows Belinda's as a barn. The building remained so until it was converted from a stable and slaughterhouse to a tearoom in the 1920s. A trap used to carry the Slindon mail was housed at the front and the stable door is still in use today.
An old saddler of the town told the story of soldiers from Brighton en route to the Salisbury Plain parking their guns where the War Memorial now stands in the Town Square and stabling their horses in Belinda's back yard.
Restoration began in 1962. In 1978, fifty years after the original conversion, extensive renovations were made to the crumbling walls and collapsing roof. The handmade clay peg tiles from the rear were used to replace broken ones at the front. During the restoration, traces of an earlier, old thatch were discovered. Many of the old timbers were used to retain the visual antiquity in the restaurant today.
Belinda's has known over a century of traditional cooking of wholesome meals, cakes and scones produced in its kitchen using traditional recipes and fresh local produce, bringing you some of the finest baking in Sussex. And although its has a much more modern twist these days we still see those traditional cakes and scones as the heart & soul of our business.
Belinda's is owned by Tom, who fell in love with Arundel during a visit some years ago and saw this as an opportunity to own and preserve an impressive piece of the towns history . He, along with all of the staff, hope you enjoy your visit and experience of olde worlde England and look forward to serving you again soon!
